Metallurgy and Steelmaking

Metallurgy is a key application for Pamecarbon biochar, including for the production of steel and chrome (steel, chrome). European regulation is tightening restrictions on the use of coal, and our biocoal is used as a carbon reducing agent in electric arc furnaces and ferroalloy production, replacing anthracite and foundry coke. High fixed carbon content (up to 95%) combined with controlled sulphur and phosphorus levels ensures consistent melt quality. Made from agricultural production waste — with no deforestation, carbon negative — which lowers the product's carbon footprint and makes it easier to meet CBAM requirements when exporting to the EU.

Biochar is a high-calorific solid fuel that doesn't just compare to coal — it outperforms it on a number of measures: from calorific value to the purity of its composition — up to 95% carbon, minimal moisture, ash and volatile matter, whereas coal contains markedly higher levels of these. At thermal power plants and industrial boiler houses it can be used on its own or blended with coal (co-firing), reducing the share of fossil fuel. Low moisture and ash content improve combustion performance and reduce boiler equipment operating costs.

In chemical production, biochar serves as a feedstock for producing activated carbon, carbon sorbents and fillers. Its high porosity and developed surface area make it an attractive substrate for subsequent activation. Biocoal is also used as a reducing agent in chemical processes where fossil coal use leads to unwanted product contamination with sulphur and heavy-metal impurities.

Agriculture and Agribusiness

In agricultural applications, biochar improves soil structure and water retention, increases the bioavailability of nutrients, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from soil. Adding biochar to composts and livestock feed additives is a growing area, backed by European regulations. Pamecarbon can supply biochar with parameters that meet the EBC (European Biochar Certificate) standard.
